The most important part of our coaching philosophy is instilling a mindset based on growth and progress. Teaching our wrestlers what it takes to become successful. That process isn't based on wins & losses. It's based on consistency, discipline, and hard work. The journey of every wrestler is different. Often wrestlers that find success early don't learn to appreciate the value of hard work. Long term success will happen when wrestlers and parents embrace the concepts below. Our goal is to prepare every wrestlers for long term success. The path to success happens in small increments. It's important to enjoy the journey!
Aside from working hard and staying on task, it's important that wrestler's practice with intention. For example, if one wrestler takes 20 attacks per live practice session and another only takes 4, the first wrestler will likely improve significantly faster. Regardless what technique they're learning. The more repetitions they get in practice the more success they will have at a faster rate.
Aside from EOY qualifiers & tournaments, the results of weekly competition have no impact in the long run. What happens in those matches can make a huge difference to their long term success. We want our wrestlers focused on improving their skillset, not focused only on winning. If a wrestler if trying to improve their single leg attacks, they need to attempt as many single legs as possible in their competitions. While learning and trying to master a technique, it will likely cause them to lose matches until they've mastered that skill. Avoiding this part of the process will only delay their long term success. It's important that parents understand this and don't put unnecessary pressure on winning. Especially at a young age. The ultimate goal is to keep kids in the sport long term so they can all the benefits our sport has to offer.
Let's face it wrestling is a very difficult sport. We step out on the mat toe to toe attempting to physically control an opponent. Many wrestlers will struggle initially due to the fear of this type of competition. Fear of losing, fear of making mistakes, fear of letting others down. Learning to face that fear and focus on specific things they're trying to improve will help them build courage and confidence.
Basic fundamentals in wrestling are generally what win the big matches at the higher levels. While we may teach some fun techniques along the way, the majority of our practices are spent teaching basic skills and techniques that are most needed for success. The more repititions the better. Learning and understanding the concept of chain wrestling is one of the skills that will help a wrestler find success.
There are a few things you might hear in the practice room or at a competition. "Hard Work Pays Off" is one of the calls we have. We want this engrained into every one of our wrestlers. While it's a simple concept, it is also one of the life lessons they'll learn from this sport. "I'm Not Stopping" is the other call sign. Whether understanding the concept of chain wrestling or pushing their way through a tough match, this philosophy will help them through.
